Valencia is the capital and the most populated locality of the homonymous province and the Valencian Country. Previously it was also the capital of the extinct region of Horta de Valencia, but this region disintegrated in 1989 to form the counties of Horta Nord, Horta Sud, Horta Oest and the city of Valencia, which was thus constituted like the unique city-region of the Valencian Country. The city is also known as «cap i casal» and as the «capital of the Turia», due to its location on the banks of this river. It is the third municipality by population of Spain, with 790,201 inhabitants (INE 2016), has 1,541,047 inhabitants, which also makes it the third largest metropolitan area in Spain.
