It didn’t fail to live up to the name.
The stadium was unlike anything I’ve been in before. Unlike el Sardinero’s rugged loud atmosphere from the day before, the San Mames felt like I was somewhere famous and royal and that I should feel privelaged to witness and be part of it.
Somewhere holy. A cathedral.
It was a special feeling to be somewhere I’ve seen countless times on TV. Every Athletic home game I watch now, I can say «I’ve been there».
The Athletic fans and Basque people in general were one of the friendliest groups I’ve met on my travels anywhere. From friendly bars offering Pena merchandise to in-game tips from fans next to me, I’ll hold the club, city and region in the highest regard thanks to my experience that day.
